sounds reasonable to me.. sorry they did not get the fedorovs of the world. you know the underachiever show up when they feel like it guys but better luck next year...

to bad they could not trade for a 38 yr old d man with a 1st round and another pick.. Colorado thinks it is 1997............

for everyone criticizing the Backman move I say why

He can do everything that Malik can do without the blind passes and lack of speed.

and noone can complain about giving up too much to get him as a 4th round draft pick is nothing of real value.

The Rangers have done very well inside the conference and it looks like their best games are ahead of them. I don't think we will win the division but getting past the first round is definately a possibility especially the way the offense has been clicking recently as well as how the addition of Backman upgrades the defense.

What Sather did not say was the truth which was today his peers overpaid for defensemen.

Stuart a journeyman UFA for a 2nd and 4th for a RENTAL?

The Ducks spent a 3rd on a Bergeron and what kind of an improvement is he?

Hal Gill the only man that Malik can out skate worth 2 draft picks.

36 yr old Adam Foote for a conditional first round pick.

Salei for a player and pick

Campbell for a player and 1st rd pick.

Sather always tries to get his players on the cheap and the Backman deal was doing the Blues a favor since Backman can never stay healthy.

The second deal I am sorry has to be viewed as one of those "moves to say we made a move".

It is and until time proves otherwise an exchange of each others failures. Nobody got better out of this deal really.

Sather is better off not talking to the media

Hey Glen The team had great Chemistry two years ago. How did that work out. These deals were about making Hank happy. Not about helping the team which they dont. Well at least we have our first round pick and this is suppose to be a great Draft. I heard Hugh Jessimans brother is in this draft. Just Kidding? We should make the playoffs but I dont think we have the defense to go far. Rosy should not be resigned and they should wait until July 1 to change the roster. I like what the future holds which staal,Dubi,Tytuin,Danny G plus Bobby S,Chereponov and Asmemiov. I wish they traded Prucha he is not going to play for this team the rest of this season. They have played the best hockey without he in the line up. He services no purpose on this team. I guess because he is hurt he has no value but I think he had none before he got hurt. Wade Redden is a UFA thats who they should get in the off season. Lets hope thats not in april.

the way I see the second trade

Leneveu and Montoya are both nothing more than Henrik's future backup. Sjostrom will score more goals than Hossa and put up more points but can he play defense. We'll have to wait and see

Plus we are on the hook for 2.3 million for Backman what a waste of money. Damn it Glen

We coulda done ALOT worse!! NOW ON TO THE CUP!!! LET'S GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do people always assume that when you bring in or sign a player that is from the same country as one of your current players, it is "to please" him.

First, it was Jagr and his "czechmates" and now it's Henrik and "his swedes"

Why would we *need* to please Henrik, it's not like we traded for his twin brother or something.

I think some people here are just legitimately upset we didn't trade all our draft picks/young players (Pittsburgh) for random "all-star" rental.

Wade Redden haha funny

Phil

You think these deals made us better?

Phill, people don't ALWAYS assume that, they only assume that when the player in question comes from Europe. When Shanahan tells them about Avery, it's not that he wants a friends, he's making a good recommendation. For anyone who assumes otherwise, perhaps Lundqvist was not asking for a friend, maybe he knew more about these guys having played with them and suggested that they can be good acquisitions for the team. We shall see.

Roc,

I'm neutral to it. Doesn't do anything for or against the Rangers.

I think Pittsburgh's acquisition of Hossa will be equivalent to when the Predators traded for Forsberg.

Ideally, I was hoping they'd throw in Prucha in the Phoenix deal and maybe get Carcillo out from them in exchange.

But I guess I'll keep on dreaming and playing on my XBOX360.

I dont know about anyone else but I sick and tired of the Rangers First round draft pick disasters. Its really a joke. Montoya stock was really that low. Thats what I'm upset about the most. Every year its the same BS with these first round picks. Other then Leetch and Kovy they have not drafted a good player in the last 20 years that a disgrace. Espiecally when we finished out of the playoffs for 7 years. Det,NJ, even Philly draft in the bottom end of the draft every year and still come up with great prospects.

Roc: Mark Staal!!!

roc

hopefully with Staal, Sanguinetti and Cherepanov that trend has ended

Roc & Phill

I have a different take on todays moves by the Rangers. Backman has nothing to do with improving the team...this year. With him here you can kiss Malik and Mara goodby. Struds will remain and the Rangers will look to Sauer or Sags to break into the line up next year. Backman is simply a 5-6 D'man, is younger than Malik and has just a little more skill.

The three guys from PHX are here to fill spots in Hartford if we need to call any of those kids up due to injuries with the big club. Gratten could be an "Orr replacement" if he goes down.

All in all, I think the Rangers have improved themselves. As for any cup thoughts: 1) Sather was not going to trade any young prospects (that should be praised on this website); 2) Any thoughts of a cup run rests on the shoulders of Jagr and Shanahan in terms of getting their scoring touch to blossom; 3) Providing some position players to Hartford will allow others to get a better look at MSG.

Yes, the big, sexy deal didn't happen. But sometimes these little deals provide flexibiliy for the big club and many times that doesn't show up on the score card.

Finally, remember this; Hossa is a rental, will most likely be available on July 1st and we haven't added to our cap. Pitt gave up too much, unless they can sign him before he is a UFA. They have not addressed their defensive and goaltending problems and are hoping that they can outscore their opponents as they move toward the cup. Well, I've go news for them. The playoff are a different experience. Teams step up defensively and their goaltending steps up also. I do not see any room for improvement in any of those areas once they enter the second round. I think that's when they get eliminated.

Dubinsky isn't to shaby either!!!!

I think they improved the bottom end of the the team today. They got a guy on the fourth line who has more points than our entire fourth line and Hossa combined.Backman is better than Strudwick and is faster than the human pylon but also does not make as many bone headed passes. What I'm disapointed in is that this team had SEVEN picks in the first two rounds of two of the best draft years in a long time and only have Dubinsky to show for it.Byers is a maybe and Baranka is even more of a maybe.

rangerbill

i agree with you 100%

Jagr needs to get his shot back, Henrik needs to be at his best and Drury will be able to score the goals that the Rangers couldn't score against Buffalo last season.

After reading these comments I actually am debatign to take back my comments on the secodn deal (that it was horrible) Ben Allaire has worked with both of these guys and obviously saw something in this kid that he didnt see in montoya. Theres probably mroe to this trade than we realize and maybe Ben Allaire knows theres a brighter future in the NHL for this kid then there is for montoya but we jsut dont see that as we dotn work with these players everyday

O and i LOVE the deals not made as well....i have a friend whos a big thrasher fan who read a rumor of the thrashers givign us hossa for staal....so glad that never happened..

Tom

this guy is nothing more than an ahl goalie and Sather is just giving the typical lip service given to the press at the time of a trade. This deal is all about one first round bust for another first round semi-
bust. However,if Sjostrome is used in the fourth line he will be effective.I think it is up to Renney not to try and Jason Ward this guy to the first or second lines.Hossa was finally dumped becuase there are plenty of other options in Hartford and elswhere and the room was needed.

Montreal, Pittsburgh, Ottawa did not fix their problems.. Rangers solidified a few lines and added a bruiser with Gratton. Valiquette is Henrik's backup, Montoya was the backup in Hartford with a lot of injuries. Sjostrom is faster and younger, and yeah, it helped he played with the King for the Swedes. We didn't trade away our future, we solidified the present and opened the doors to get rid of a defenseman this summer to possibly bring up Sanguinetti. I bet Mara is getting shipped out.

Did I mention Washington is nuts. Oh, and Philly thinks adding Modry and Prospal is going to fix things??? The Devils were pretty quiet, adding another D, but lets face it, they are playing above their heads right now. Chris "I am a Goon" Simon was shipped to the growing Goon Farm in Minnesota. I think what the NYR did was smart. Avalanche are praying all this crap they have done pays off and they make the playoffs... but let's face it, they aren't going anywhere after that.. and they gave up a 1st,3rd and a potential conditional for Salei and Foote. Forsberg.. gimme a break.

Pittsburgh 1 Isles 0 Malkin strikes again

If you consider LeNeveu and Montoya as a straight up swap then we are getting back a decent 2-way winger, a couple of AHL depth players with some NHL experience, and a pick in exchange for Hossa. Is there anyone who doesn't want to make that deal?
People are going to say that Montoya is much higher valued than Leneveu but their numbers essentially the same, Al lost his job in Hartford, and no one is in a better position to evaluate both of these goalies than Allaire who's been calling on Slats to make this deal all year.

cr

I agree.
We definitely got the better of that deal at "right now" talent.

Montoya vs. LeNeveu will only be realized down the road.

Isles down 2-0 hahaha

Bostons up by 2 over Ottawa Ottawa must secretly have something against NY...they lose to every team playing against us for a playoff spot

Boston up 2-0 on Ottawa.

Why can't we catch a break?

Roc, why are you so down on Prucha. His production is down but this is a function of his ice-time decreasing (mostly on the PP, as he has gone from over 4 min a game in his 30 goal season to less than 1 minute this year). He has more goals at this point is his career than Kovalov did after his first 3 seasons. I also believe the team changed its style of play this year to a more defensive style as statistics show that most of the forwards scoring is down.

people forget things like that about prucha... i remember him centering the pp in his first year tallying 13 goals on the pp.... very few remember that.... lol....

Charlie

Prucha stinks. He had a good run but now its time to move on.

Plus Marc Staal looks good right now but to to soon to tell.

Guys all the stats from two years ago can be thrown out the window. Two years there 6 50 scorers last year there was 1. Plus Prucha was a unknown now he is on the radar. Like I said we have three other people that are very much like him. I also feel the knee injury really hurt him. His speed and hitting has declined since then. But he has no value right now. I would have traded him to PHX instead of Hossa. At least Hossa can kill plenties. I know he is a fan favorite but its time to move on.

when prucha gets back...who sits, hollweg?

After the King's surprise ascension, we were never going to see Montoya in Blue. As we all know, goalies can take longer to mature and come into their game. My best wishes go out to Al, that he has a chance to blossom into a number one goalie. Out west. In the desert. Far away.

And good luck to Marcel as well. Too bad Marian didn't follow him out west, too.

Paul, I believe he had 16 pp tallies in his freshman year which was a record.

Roc, you don't measure Prucha by his goal scoring alone. Remember he was brought to this team before he was a "goal scorer". I don't believe he had more than a dozen goals in any season prior to his freshman year yet still made it to the NHL. It is the other intangibles, hustle, guts, team player etc. and no one goes to the net more consistantly than him on this team.

He also has an advantage over Dawes and Callahan, he has been successful at this level, the other 2 will have to prove they can do it at this level, (I am guessing it is just a matter of time before Dawes does so, not too sure about Cally just yet) until then Prucha should get the nod.

not sure if this was posted somewhere else but doesnt orr have a bruised sternum? could it be more than a bruise?
i thought michelletti (sp?) said orr had a bruised sternum during the last game.

Jess:

Stuart a journeyman UFA for a 2nd and 4th for a RENTAL?

Detroit got a player who may be a key depth defensemen on a team that believes it can legitimately challenge for a Cup. This is not Columbus throwing away 2 draft picks (only one whom has an even "decent" chance of playing in the future) for a "lets hope we squeeze into the playoffs."

The Ducks spent a 3rd on a Bergeron and what kind of an improvement is he?

Is he a detriment? They have a deep defensive corp - but its key members are old. He will not likely play a huge role. But if one of the Big 4 goes down for the playoffs, having an experienced, d-man with some offensive skill may be the key to them getting past the 3rd round.

More generally, does you think a 3rd rounder such an overpayment for that type of team? Looking at the drafts between 1999 and 2005, there were 218 players drafted in the 3rd round. A total of 18 of them have played more than 100 games (8%). Even if you remove the 2004 and 2005 drafts (recognizing that those kids would still be in early 20s), you get 155 players, 11 of whom have played slightly more than 1 season's total games - 11 %.

Even if you go back farther - in the entire decade of the 90s, there were 249 players drafted in the 3rd round. 82 of them played more than 100 games. That's 33%. Is a 33% chance that you will get a player who can play at least 1 season to much to spend for a guy who could be a key depth player on a repeating Stanley Cup team?

Hal Gill the only man that Malik can out skate worth 2 draft picks.

Pittsburgh gave up a 2nd rounder (decent) and a 5th rounder (always a huge gamble) for a big tough defensemen who has a history of playing well against big opponents - exactly the kind of player Pittsburgh's defense needed. The kind of player who can be a key advantage in a long playoff series (and the difference between making it to the 2nd and 3rd round). Is this really overpayment?

36 yr old Adam Foote for a conditional first round pick.

I agree that this one is a bad move. Even though Foote was allegedly playing well this season, the Avalanche have to hope he plays into Chelios years to make this worth it, or they need to completely stun the world and make it to Round 3 and be a force for years to come.

Salei for a player and pick

I always thought Salei was way overrated (and I don't even think he's typically rated that high). Straskins was a serivceable 4/5 defensemen. I think it was a bad move.

Campbell for a player and 1st rd pick.

I think this is exactly what a 2nd-tier offensive defensemen should go for these days. San Jose has a decent chance to do damage in the playoffs. San Jose has the cap room to sign him to a long-term deal. If they don't, they are throwing away 2 first round draft picks. But if they do sign him, they are filling a hole with the type of player that everyone in the league would like to have. They have a need an offensively-skilled defensemen who can make quick passes to jump start the offense (unless you think they should stick with Sandis Ozolinsh) and Campbell fits that role. Yes, it would probably be better for SJ to get a bigger/tougher defensemen who can also provide the offense...but where are those players. And if they are available, are they available for two 1st rounders? I don't think so.

Sather is better off not talking to the media

Couldn't agree more. Who was he even talking to? Does Dubi have a special line to his fishing lodge in MooseJaw?

Malik for a bag of pucks......
hahaha all around im very pleased with what happened today (deadline day is like a national holiday in Canada) Sather didnt trade away the future for a rental player. personally I think this group is fine and Glen did some tweaking with the trades he did make...the Sjostrome pick up should be good for our fourth line scoring (hopefully) and backman provides some much needed depth on D.
No complaints on my behalf. I love the rumour mill on trade day, its about as entertaining as avery in a room alone with tucker's wife.

saget

exactly which is why I have been saying we got Backman for nothing. Callahan has been our only 4th rounder in the past what 7 years to play significant minutes.

We could have used Belak, Salvador or Davison more so than "18 hits" this year Backman. Too bad we did not get reincarnation of Mike Backman. Oh, I know..Slats was downing some carrot cake, and Schoeney whispered in his wax filled ears that "we have a chance to get Backman from the Blues"....."I like that tough guy, Barret Backman, make the deal" Woops Barret Jackman #5 was signed last night. Just what we need to toughen up down the stretch, two more Swedes!!!!

Dubi,

Awesome entry here... I thoroughly enjoyed reading it....

Who interviewed Sather?

Joey

i was listening to the Toronto version of WFAN and they were talking about Belak. Basically he was Toronto's version of Strudwick . He played wing and defense but he was frustrated that he never got to play. The only real difference between the two is that Strudwick is a veteran leader while Belak is more of a goon.

I wanted Salvador from the beginning. He's not gonna stand out but he's a solid physical defenseman with a cheaper price tag but is a UFA next year. Pair him with Staal and it gives Staal the freedom to take more risks offensively and develop more offensively something that he hasn't really done at all this season.

Uh Roc

I like what the future holds which staal,Dubi,Tytuin,Danny G plus Bobby S,Chereponov and Asmemiov. Posted at 6:33 PM

First you praise prospects like Staal Sanguinetti and Cherepanov all of whom, are first round picks. Then 17 minutes later you trash the franchise for your idea of 20 years of failures.

Which is it? They stink or are they disasters?

You can be dismissed because you really have no idea what you are in fact talking about. The more you post the more it looks like you are more about gaining a reaction from some of the dumb stuff you say.

Between the poor spelling, grammar and lack of common sense it is hard to think you are nothing more than a problem child who wants to get people riled up. I for one think you are saying the nonsense you are to gain some attention for yourself.

Where are you when the team plays well? Funny we do not see you here but on days when nothing is happening you show up with repeated posts trashing players, coaches and yours truly.

Rangerbill

All in all, I think the Rangers have improved themselves. As for any cup thoughts: 1) Sather was not going to trade any young prospects (that should be praised on this website);

Nobody is going to praise Sather because to do so would mean he is actually doing his job.

2) Any thoughts of a cup run rests on the shoulders of Jagr and Shanahan in terms of getting their scoring touch to blossom;

I do not think it is just on their shoulders but also Drury and Gomez as well as Henrik getting his "A" game back.

3) Providing some position players to Hartford will allow others to get a better look at MSG.

That is a point that will escape people as IF I am understanding you correctly, getting Hartford to go deeper in the AHL playoffs (first round exits last 2 season) will help show if any of those prospects (PLUS the additions of CHL and NCAA prospects) have a future.

All in all you have some valid points that many will not get.

Czech

Sather is just giving the typical lip service given to the press at the time of a trade.

First give Sather and his team some credit they did not overpay like his peers did to get what they wanted. I will agree with you that what Sather said was just typical babble though.

Saget

I think you are missing my point which is IF Sather had done anything like these moves it would have cost the Rangers that kind of draft picks or prospects.

Now you are one of the level headed folks, tell me honestly had Sather gave away a first round pick or a Dubinsky in a deal what would this place be like right now?

We both know the honest answer

Does Dubi have a special line to his fishing lodge in MooseJaw?

The Fishing Lodge is in Banaff. You know I am trying to picture the press conference and to be honest I am glad I was not invited because I agree with Czech is was a lot of empty talk that said nothing.

Look what you did LOL

jess

it depends who you get in return i'd gladly trade a 1st rounder and Dubinsky for Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, Iginla, Lecavalier...I think you get the point...

Jess

You can honestly say the Rangers have done a great job drafting. What I said or meant to say is the rangers future looks good but you missed my point again. We all thought that Montoya, Malhotra,Dube,Cloutier,Jessiman,Goneau, etc. Where going to be great prospects you never know. I'm just pointing out the Rangers poor judgement and the faith that they hold on to player until the are worthless. Also I didnt know spelling and grammar was such a big deal on the BlueShirt Bulletin website. Bro, you need to get off your high horse. I know you right about the Rangers prospects in the Bulletin but you cant tell me they a have done a good job in the past with there drafting. I hope this pan out believe me I do.

Damn it!

Washington,Boston,Carolina,Montreal,Pitts all won
and the stinkin Devils got a point. Dont they ever loss in regulation

hahahah we got the josh gratton that got wrecked by emery.... hahahahahahah

ok hes definitely won the rest of the fights ive wathched, false alarm.... lol.... he was the enforcer over there after the laraque trade...
