Jess Rubenstein reports on Saturday night's action in the WHL playoffs: "It was a very good night for Ranger prospects in the WHL playoffs. For the seconnd night in a row a Ranger prospect was named first star of the game. Tonight there were two first stars. In Prince Albert, Rick Kozak had two goals to earn first star honors and Dane Byers added two assists to gain second star honors. The duo led the Prince Albert Raiders to a 3-0 win to take a 2-0 series lead over Zdenek Bahensky's Saskatoon Blades. Byers and Kozak were solid contributors at both ends of the ice. Byers was hitting everything that moved and rightfully earned his star of the game. Zdenek Bahensky played well in a losing cause with solid checking and was denied on a couple of occasions by a hot goalie.
"In Kootenay, Nigel Dawes earned first star of the night by scoring the winning goal 35 second into OT as the Ice evened up their series 1-1 by defeating Kamloops 3-2. For Dawes it was his first goal of the playoffs. In Seattle, Marcus Jonasen had an assist during the Tri-City Americans' heartbreaking double-OT loss. And in Medicine Hat, Roman Psurny's Tigers took a 1-0 series lead with a 3-2 win over Red Deer." Thanks, Jess. CP report on the Raiders here.
In the NCAA tournament, Al Montoya beat Wisconsic 4-1 to move Michingan into the quarterfinals, and Joey Crabb moved up along with Colorado College after an OT win over Colgate. Bruce Berlet marvels at the Wolf Pack goaltending tandem of Jason LaBarbera and Steve Valiquette.
The Jets tried to undermine Cablevision's apparent overbid of $760 million for the Hudson railyards, which bested their own $720 million bid, by claiming that when you net the cost of building a deck over the rail yards, which Cablevision wants the MTA to pay for, makes its really a $410 million offer. In Newsday the other day, an ultra-scathing indictment of Jimmy Dolan: "James Dolan killed the Knicks and Rangers, he ruined the Garden and he personally drove Marv Albert to New Jersey, a superfecta of sports management ineptitude that can never be duplicated. Even if Daddy lets him keep his job a few more years." And it gets worse from there.
