Jamie Lundmark is back. He talked to Bruce Berlet about what hockey life in Italy is like, where most of the team have day jobs and everyone takes a siesta every afternoon.
Vancouver has a new owner, near-billionaire John McCaw having sold half his stake to Francesco Aquilini, a local real estate mogul. Terms were not disclosed, but with McCaw having entertained bids of C$250 million for the team and its arena in their entirety, it’s a safe bet he got somewhere in the neighborhood of half of Forbes’s $148 million overall valuation. This for a team he bought less than ten years ago, after the implementation of the recently expired CBA, for $56 million. Tough business, this hockey business.
Maybe Arthur Levitt should rethink his position on it and get in on the action. He said he wouldn’t invest a single dollar of his own money in an NHL team. But since 2002, the start of the season he “audited,” seven NHL teams, nearly one quarter of them, have had significant equity transactions (Buffalo, Ottawa, New Jersey, Atlanta, Toronto, San Jose, and now Vancouver), with some rich, savvy businesses or business people involved in all of them.
