One day after expressing amazement at how much hockey news there is despite the lockout, we very nearly struck out today. All the local papers are understandably pre-occupied with the Yankees’ historic loss to Red Sox. And we couldn’t find any more hockey stories about presidential candidates – at first.
But fear not – we’ve dug up enough links to justify our existence for one more day, even another story about Kerry’s hockey passion.
First, Damien Cox at ESPN.com leads off his “Hockey talk for the locked-out soul” with a timely stat – the Rangers and Bruins have faced-off in a playoff series only once in the past 32 years, a stat you can’t blame on the Rangers’ current playoff hiatus.
Timely, of course, because the Yankee-Red Sox series has demonstrated again the great rivalry that exists between the two cities, one that was once the Rangers’ top rivalry as well, before the Isles, Devils, and Flyers entered the mix.
Some good news for Ranger fans who live in an alternate universe where there is no lock-out: EA Sports’ fantasy simulation of the 2004-05 season has the Blueshirts off to surprisingly good start, leading their division seven games in to the season with a 3-2-2 record.
Ranger prospect Nigel Dawes tells WHL This Week about moving from the big city to the remote mountains of British Columbia. The big city he’s talking about is Winnipeg. We’re sure he’d love to one day talk about what it’s like to move from the mountains to the big city – New York City.
Yesterday we pointed you at the Ranger web site for a short update on Henrik Lundqvist. Today we point you to an article from a week ago on Lundqvist at HockeysFuture.com. Jonathan Paiement is the subject once again at the Rangers’ official site.
Our latest Kerry story is in the latest issue of The Hockey News. A preview (unfortunately, not the whole story) is available online. So too are previews of THN items on Mike York in Germany and Jeff Hamilton’s decision to play for Hartford.
Finally, plumbing the depths of relevant online links, as the Rangers did when signing journeyman forward Ted Donato as a free agent a couple of years ago, here is an online chat with, yes, Ted Donato, forced by the lockout to finally retire. Donato is now a rookie head coach at Harvard University, where he played college hockey. Ranger draftees Dylan Reese and Rob Flynn play for Donato at Harvard.
Well, that’s quite a bit that turned up after all.
